Iceland:
A Star is Born
Life is starting to imitate art in Iceland thanks to the many movies and television shows filmed on the North Atlantic island in recent times. From the hit HBO series Game of Thrones to movies like Interstellar, Iceland is now a "co-star" in many productions.
In much the same way that Out of Africa boosted Kenya tourism and Eat, Pray, Love brought more people to Bali, tourists are flocking to Iceland to visit the places where scenes have been shot on location. Among these are the Svinafellsjokull Glacier in Vatnajökull National Park, Thingvellir National Park, Mývatn Lake and Krafla Volcano in northern Iceland, as well as Dyrhólaey, Skógafoss and Reynisfjara on the south shore.
With its stark "fire and ice" landscapes, the island has proved especially popular with science-fiction stories. Other recent films that shot on location in Iceland include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Prometheus, Thor: The Dark World, Star Trek Into Darkness, Oblivion and Noah, as well as upcoming movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Iceland Pro Cruises (IPC) offers port calls on its seven Iceland Circumnavigation itineraries, as well as pre and post cruise tours, that visit many of the dramatic locations featured in these films. www.icelandprocruises.com
