Big Dreams, Gigantic Continent

Big Dreams, Gigantic Continent

Big Dreams, Gigantic Continent
Explore the Great White Desert
At 54 million square miles in area, the scale of Antarctica might be difficult to comprehend. To help put that in perspective, if you and your fellow explorers on the MS Midnatsol divided the continent equally amongst yourselves, your slice of this polar pie would be a bit larger than the state of Nevada. The history of exploration in Antarctica is a dramatic one, and drew adventurers from around the world, hoping to be the first to conquer the hostile terra incognita. Their stories are of adventure, bravery, and endurance. Nearly 200 years after explorers first saw its shores, Antarctica is still not that easy to conquer. The coldest, driest, windiest continent on Earth, Antarctica remains a travel adventure without equal. As the polar expert since 1893, Hurtigruten offers you the best access to this country of superlatives.

A True Adventure in Antarctica

A True Adventure in Antarctica

Before the MS Midnatsol departs Punta Arenas, Chile, you may want to visit the memorial to Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It’s said that kissing one of the statue’s feet will bring good luck and calm seas. As your ship makes its way through the Chilean fjords, keep an eye out for the Magellanic penguin, named for the explorer who spotted them in 1520. When you reach Antarctica, learn how to sea kayak in a certification program that offers professional instruction and multiple excursions in an amazing setting.

Chilean Fjords and Antarctica Adventure

As you voyage through the Magellan Strait and Beagle Channel, take in the dramatic mountain and valley landscapes of the Chilean fjords. Scan the skies for one of the world’s largest flying birds, the Andean condor, which can have a wingspan longer than 10 feet wide. Use your time on board the MS Midnatsol to enjoy an Argentine wine tasting or, if you are looking for something more active, tango lessons. Upon arrival in Antarctica, be prepared for wildlife encounters with Adélie penguins, orcas, humpback whales, and more.
From the South Atlantic to Antarctica

Kick off your journey in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo. Here the Ciudad Veija (Old City) dating back to the 18th century remains a cultural hub. Then you’ll head to the Falkland Islands, where sheep farms and pubs are signs of a very British way of life. On South Georgia, visit the resting place of famed polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. When you get to Port Lockroy, you’ll visit the renovated British research station where you can see what life was like for the early researchers in Antarctica and send a postcard home.
Ultimate Antarctica Experience

Your adventure begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world. On South Georgia, visit Grytviken, a former whaling station, and home to the Norwegian Seaman’s Church. Once you reach Antarctica, go ashore on Half Moon Island, a glittering gem and home to chinstrap penguins, Arctic terns, and south polar skuas, and a stopping-off place for Weddell and Antarctic fur seals. Travel through Drake Passage on the return voyage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet.
