Ho Chi Minh City

formerly Saigon, is the largest city in Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is Vietnam at its most dazzling: a high-octane city of commerce and culture that has driven the country forward with its pulsating energy.  The city breathes life and vitality into all who settle here â€" visitors cannot help but be hauled along for the ride.

Jade Emperor Pagoda

Built in 1909 in honor of the supreme Taoist god (the Jade Emperor or King of Heaven, Ngoc Hoang), this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in HCMC. It is chock-fill of statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The temple's statues, depicting characters from both Buddhist and Taoist lore are made from reinforced papier mâché.  Its roof is encrusted with elaborate tile work

Cu Chi Tunnels

Two sections of this remarkable tunnel network (which are enlarged and upgraded versions of the real thing) are open to the public. One is near the village of Ben Dinh and the other is 9 miles farther at Ben Duoc. Most tourists visiting the tunnels end up at Ben Dinh, (it’s easier for tour buses to reach).

Reunification Palace

Surrounded by Royal Palm trees, the dissonant 1960s architecture of this government building and the eerie mood that accompanies a walk through its deserted halls make it one of the most intriguing spectacles in HCMC. The building is deeply associated with the fall of Saigon in 1975, yet it's the overblown kitsch detailing and period motifs that steal the show.

Ben Thanh Market

The most central of all the markets, Ben Thanh and its surrounding streets comprise one of the city’s liveliest areas. Everything that’s commonly eaten, worn or used by the Saigonese is piled high: vegetables, dried fruit, meats, spices, scorpions in alcohol, sweets, tobacco, clothing, one-day suits, wristwatches, blingtastic jewelry, hardware and more spill forth from a profusion of stalls. Souvenir items can be found in equal abundance. Vendors are determined and prices usually higher than elsewhere, so bargain vigorously (although some stalls have 'Fixed Price' signs).
