The new Expedition Class - new milestones at sea

HANSEATIC inspiration:
First steel cut at the VARD shipyard

The steel cutting on 5 October 2017 marks the start of the construction of the second expedition ship of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. Karl J. Pojer, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, gave the official start signal for the construction process in the VARD shipyard in Tulcea, Romania.

"After an intense planning stage, we are very pleased to commence the HANSEATIC inspiration's construction process with the first steel cut. The demand for expedition cruises is three times higher than supply, "with our two new builds next to the very popular BREMEN we are well positioned for the future," says Karl J. Pojer. The keel-laying of the HANSEATIC inspiration is scheduled for November 2017; and the christening and maiden voyage are scheduled for October 2019. The steel cutting and laying of the keel for the new HANSEATIC nature already took place in May and June 2017.

The new expedition ships, which will be positioned in the five-star segment, are being built by Norwegian VARD Group, which is a subsidiary of the Italian shipbuilding Group Fincantieri. The ship hull will be constructed in the Romanian shipyard location of Tulcea and afterwards be towed to VARD Langsten in Norway, where the outfitting and the finishing of the interior is set to take place.

The HANSEATIC inspiration will be fitted with cutting-edge equipment and environmental technology and will accommodate up to 230 guests (or up to 199 guests on Antarctica cruises). PC6, the highest ice class for passenger ships, makes it possible to conduct expeditions far into polar waters as well as with warm-water destinations such as South America and the Amazon. A particular highlight: thanks to her construction, the HANSEATIC inspiration can cruise the Great Lakes of North America.

Seventeen on-board Zodiacs and e-Zodiacs with eco-friendly electric drive systems allow for landings in remote expedition areas, regardless of the vicinity to a port; for warm-water activities, there is a marina available.
